The Importance of Community

Edit: I edited this post from a few months back to say that the community page I started on Facebook is for more than just runners. The group is for everyone interested in health and fitness but is NOT a place of judgment.

One of the worst feelings in the world is feeling alone.

Ok, I know, super downer way to start a post but its true. No one wants to feel alone. EVERYONE wants to feel included, understood, and part something bigger.

This is why community is so important. Whether it is a moms group, a cooking class, Cross Fit, or a book club, communities of like minded people are what bring out the best in us and help us work towards the best versions of ourselves.

A year and a half ago when I knew I wanted to get in shape, I felt really lost. I didn’t have direction and I didn’t know anyone personally who was a new mom trying to get fit. So I did what the only thing I could, I took to social media.

I loved Instagram for posting pictures of my kids, but I knew there had to be more to it. I searched hashtags like #fitness and #fitmom and the rest is history.

The community of fit friends I found on Instagram was amazing. There were so many people sharing their stories and connecting with others, I knew I had to be a part of it. Shortly there after, I created my own fitness Instagram account and started posting.

Over the past year and a half, that account has gone through many transformations but one fact remains, the people I connect with through that account are some of the most genuine and dedicated people I know. Without them, I’m not really sure if I would be where I am today, because although I am a self motivated person, I do crave human interaction and fitness is just so much more enjoyable when you can share it with others who just “get it”.

Its because of this amazing community that I’m ready to create my own community. I am in no way wanting to compete with or replicate the community I have become a part of on Instagram, instead, I see the community I am trying to create as a bonus! Because, who couldn’t use MORE fit friends that just get where you are coming from?

My group is geared towards moms and other busy women (who am I kidding. . .this is ALL women) who need support and a community to motivate them in their journeys to becoming healthier and happier people. You don’t have to be a runner to join us, you just have to want the support of a community in your journey to health.  If you would like to join us, please head here!
