Spice it UP!

{Food tip} Spice up your food! Nothing is more boring than the same old chicken and rice, though that is what a lot of people think they need to eat to be healthy. Here are a few ways to spice up a bland meal.

1)Marinate your meats ahead of time! Marinate chicken or fish for up to 24 hours in spices, herbs, and some olive oil. Then, when you grill or bake them, the meat will have so much more flavor!

My favorite marinade for chicken? Olive oil, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. I marinate all of my chicken for at least an hour prior to cooking.

2) When cooking rice, barley, or quinoa, add spices to the water as it cooks OR cook the grains in vegetable or chicken broth. This will really help inject the grains with flavor so that they don’t taste “blah”. I always cook my rice in broth and add a little garlic or onion powder to the broth while it is cooking.

3) Also with grains, when they are done cooking and you are about to serve them, cutting up some fresh herbs and sprinkling them on top is a great way to add some more flavor. I love adding fresh Italian parsley on top of quinoa or rice.

4) When eating steamed veggies, toss them in olive oil, a sprinkle of sea salt, and a spice of your choice before serving. I absolutely love asparagus with dried thyme, broccoli with garlic powder, and sweet potato with a Mexican blend.

I hope these tips help! Remember that healthy does not mean bland and that your spice cabinet is your best weapon in creating tasty food.
